- Reviewed in the United States on May 23, 2021I devoured this book, even though I thought there could be little that I don't already know. If for no other reason, read this book for a lesson on how to write, describe and logically analyze a subject using the elegance of the English language. I quote a passage: "To a man of Donald Trump's self-confidence, the idea of his becoming president of the United States was not at all outrageous....He was a rich celebrity whose tastes were not to hobnob with the swells and socially eminent benefactors, but, crucially for a presidential candidate, to harvest the appreciation of the lower middle and working classes of America who were not appalled, but rather, to some degree, inspired, by his bravura, buffoonery and raw egotism, for behind it they saw an outrageously successful version of themselves, and one who, they intuited, understood them and their desires, fears, and hopes. "
Pure grammatical music. Envy on my part. On the whole, one comes away from reading this book with a deep knowledge of the incidious, manipulative, dishonest means by which the media, the deep state and the Democrats treated the last President who deeply loves this country and had brilliant ideas for its future. Yet, he still was able to overcome the noise and implement what we some of us knew and some will see in hindsight were genius negociations for a betterment of America. Bravo!!
- Reviewed in the United States on November 9, 2018I like Conrad Black's style. He is neither overly praising or overly condemning of this President, but appraises him based on actions. It's worth reading to get a reasonable and realistic view of a man that is not perfect but has many strong qualities that are contributing value to this country. Don't forget he ran with the sharks in New York, and was also consulted when the city was in such trouble financially. He knows a few things, and Black has the scoop. Probably one of the best reads on Trump, next to Newt Gingrich's book.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 22, 2018One tiny fault. The last 10 or so pages could have been a prologue or epilogue because they brilliantly sum up President Trump’s successes and eccentricities. Read them first.
As a mature adult with extensive international experience I learned quickly that results are the measure. Eccentricity is not a curse.
Perhaps we don’t learn that until we are in our late twenties and that might explain the disdain for him at universities. But I pity those over that age who should read this excellent work to balance their views of unfounded hypocritical cynicism.
Don’t worry, the author cites what some might call the ‘bad stuff’ but he puts it in context.
I would rather have a strong, intuitive president with quirks rather than a phoney who is a weathervane not a leader.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 2, 2018Consider this brief review in the following context. A) I previously digested Conrad Black's substantial work, Flight of the Eagle, B) I thoroughly read Conrad Black's Wiki page and he is pretty much a certified genius with some amazing life history, and C) I've been a somewhat hardcore political follower since the Clinton era, and was an early adopter of the Trump direction and message. So... Black brings a great background to this book. The first 40% was super reading for me - I liked to imbibe the early Trump and how Black views him. Once the campaign portion was underway and all the other twists and turns that have occurred since then - well, been there, done that already, so it was light reading for me. To others, it's probably an excellent catch-up. I don't want to fault Black at all, and his Flight of the Eagle was fantastic and deep and also a great overview that I had never had before in quite the same way. But for me, this book just slightly lacked the follow-on brilliance I was hoping for. But that's just me. Black remains in a major pedestal in my world.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 16, 2018I just bought and read this book on my Kindle. History is written by the winners, and this book is a preview of how Trump will be viewed in history if he is a successful president. I have long been a fan of this authors writing, and I was not disappointed.
I was more interested in what I would learn. As a news hound, I feel reasonably well read on the subject. I was pleasantly surprised that he expressed the opinion that I already had that the 2 (or 3?) prior presidents had laid the groundwork for a Trump, with their own failed presidencies, smugness and interbreeding. But his unfamiliar assertion was that Trump had been serious about becoming President for decades, and that his last decade or two was spent preparing for this journey. I had assumed that Trump was a publicity hound, and his campaign was not necessarily meant to win. In Blacks telling, he cultivated fame with working class, middle American enterprises (Reality TV, Pro wrestling, Beauty contests). And immersed himself in their ideas.
I also learned that Trump was a more honest businessman than I believed (The author did a large business deal with him), and was surprised how long held many of his policy inclinations are.
Highly recommend this book
- Reviewed in the United States on April 11, 2019A well written and factual account of Donald Trump 's ascent to the presidency of the United States. The author, who is Canadian, has no axe to grind and takes no sides but presents the story faithfully and factually, but in a fashion that keeps your attention and interest at all times. Thoroughly enjoyable and entertaining.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 29, 2018This is an excellent biography. It shows clearly how Trump the man became Trump the President. It's not a fawning book either. Where Trump has warts, the author shows them. I highly recommend this book to every American who cares about our government. If you think Trump is an ass, this book will show you why. If you think he's a genius, this book will show you why. Either way, you'll come away with a better understanding of the man who heads our government.

5.0 out of 5 stars Well written and informative on Donald Trump
Conrad Black is one of the more gifted authors we can read and he did an excellent job in portraying Donald Trump from his personal experience and friendship with him. He is fair- he gives a lot of information on Trumps dealings over the years, which most people will not be aware of. All in all, Black writes well and it is a good read!

5.0 out of 5 stars The character of 'a President like no other' illuminated
Conrad Black concisely lays out a generally sympathetic but realistic portrait of Donald Trump from his early years, leading up to his first serious run for the Presidency which, to most people's amazement, he won.
Then it is onto a review of the remarkable first two years, both in terms of what he himself has done but also, perhaps more so, in terms of what his opponents have done in reaction.
Maybe we would have been less amazed by Trump if we had known more about the tough world of New York real estate development and what sort of talent, determination and massive self-belief it needs to succeed. As Black says "Trump is no Eagle Scout", but perhaps only such a man could succeed in pushing through his vision - which is a remarkably conventionally conservative one, as Black points out - against the apparatus of the state, the vicious lies of his increasingly unhinged political opponents and with only partial support from his own party.
A remarkable Presidency in the making illuminated by a wonderful, elegant writer. A pleasure to read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Finally , a Trump exposè that is worthy .
Conrad Black has written probably the only excellent book about Trump. The many books that have been published in the past year or so on Mr Trump lack the facts , background and no nonsense assessment of the man and his past , present and future . Mr Black always has his facts correct , never offers “fake news” and has completely satisfied the assignment of bringing realism to the Trump story . He connects the dots in a way no other author / storyteller has done and leaves us with a feeling of “knowing “ that is so satisfying . And A+ assessment of the man and the many myths .
