- Reviewed in the United States on October 26, 2015This is a great book to leave on the unmade bed of a teenager in your life, but only after you've read it yourself and rebutted a few nagging doubts that are likely knocking around in your head. Well paced, funny, and insightful, Geraghty and Edwards offer a light hearted but resonate affirmation of one the fundamental pillars of our society- being a good dad. But beyond a father's contribution to society, the book nicely illustrates that it's also the most fulfilling way to spend one's days. If nothing else- it shows that you can still hang out with your best friend 20 years after graduation.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 18, 2015Good advise for any young man to marry early but what is needed is a companion novel for young women. It has been my observation - as a 63 year old - that it is women that are equally responsible for the decline of the institution of marriage as the Peter Pan mindset. I recall the motto "A woman needs a man like a fish needs a bicycle" as a teen. No fault divorce (makes as much sense as no fault foreclosure) has led to the present situation where nine of ten divorces are initiated by the wife. Combine a fifty percent divorce rate with the family law paradigm of "What's hers is hers and what's his is theirs" in the division of community assets does not make marriage a good business plan for any man. The racetrack gives better odds.
Jim and Cam are obviously very lucky to find their wives but not everybody can be lucky. Still the book was an enjoyable and easy read I would recommend it to anyone.

- Reviewed in the United States on November 19, 2015As I lamented in the past, the cover art would really be complete with an adoring wife clinging to a leg of the weight-lifting dad. Now, on to the actual text of the book: I've always liked Geraghty's wit and tone and loved The Weed Agency. As a subscriber to The Daily Jolt, I know what I'm getting and this is consistent with his style, but about family matters rather than political ones. Cam's "yours-and-ours" story of marrying into an insta-family is fun to read about, what with the park hit-and-run wedding and all that, and both seem to have a square head on their respective shoulders. From an advice perspective, I don't know that the book brings much that is profound, and I don't think it is intended to be. This is a memoir from a pair of dads about dadhood thus far. That's what makes it fun.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 26, 2015A very fun read. I am 31 with 2 young boys and a 3rd child on the way so I am sort of already all in on the being a dad is cool idea but I still really enjoyed this book. It would be a great gift for any young male especially post college or newly married/engaged. There are some great nuggets of knowledge and it is also just a fun read. I really enjoy Jim Geraghty's morning newsletter and his 3 martini lunch podcast so I was excited to support him and happy that is turned out to be a fun book too. May have to look into picking up some of his other books soon.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 19, 2016We gave this book to our 16 year-old in his Easter basket. While not all subjects are applicable to him yet, we thought there was enough of interest in several of the chapters and the rest will be of use soon enough. The conversational style of the writing makes for easy (and fun) reading, and while I may not agree with all of the advice, there's a great deal that I do.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 7, 2015I am not the target audience, but I like Geraghty's writing style, so I bought it. If I knew a young man who was graduating fro HS or college, I would definitely give him this book. It's honest and offers encouragement to the most maligned class in the US today--men. All the words of wisdom ring true.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 25, 2018I was worried that my 19yo son would resist the advice in this book, as it is rather direct and intense. But he loved it! He said the author really hits the nail on the head and describes many of his friends to a "T." He thought it was very funny and entertaining. I think it's the first book he's read in several years. So now I'm buying him Jordan Peterson's 12 Rules for Life: An Antidote to Chaos Hopefully he will like that just as much.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 27, 2015Gerahty and Edwards have pointed out the need to resurrect Ward Cleaver as a role-model, rather than as the butt of jokes. This book tells young men that growing up, getting married, and being a father is not the end of freedom, but the fulfillment of it. Written in a light-hearted way, with numerous autobiographical morsels, it should appeal to young men getting ready (or not) to assume the responsibilities (and joys) of adulthood. I enjoyed it, and will be passing it to my 20-something son in the hope that it rubs off. Kudos.
