Superego Paperback – January 6, 2015

4.5 out of 5 stars 510 ratings

Can a genetically engineered psychopath grow a conscience, get the girl, and save the galaxy? Two out of three ain’t bad.

Rico has a problem. The experimental program that gave him the high intelligence and lightning reflexes he needs as a hit man for a galactic crime syndicate left him incapable of internalizing moral imperatives the rest of us take for granted. It takes real effort for him to pass as a normal human being and he avoids it whenever he can. But he has a job he loves, a fast ship and plenty of cash. So life is good.

When Rico takes an assignment on a planet where a major political conference seeks to bring more order to the galaxy, he accidentally thwarts a terrorist attack and has to pose as a visiting cop from a faraway world. To complicate matters, he partners with a local female cop and soon realizes he has fallen in love. That shouldn’t happen! But not everything is as it seems, and as the story speeds along from one unexpected plot twist to another, Rico discovers the secret of his own identity and faces a terrible choice.

Will Rico live to become fully human? Or will he die just as he grasps what has been missing from his life? Frank Fleming’s exciting debut novel combines action, romance, and moral philosophy in an entertainingly combustible mix.

Superego is a romp. Let me get that out first. The book is just flat out fun but there are some caveats. 1. You must enjoy cynical humor and 2. You must enjoy stories with firearms.

Yes, yes, I know that a lot of you are saying "so what?" right now but given th recent uproar in the SF community (especially in recent years) this book is not for everyone. This book is not for those who are shocked by violence, it is not for those who are easiliy offended, this book is for those who are probably somewhat familiar with the author's humor or at least a style similar to this author's humor.

If you are a fan of writers like John Ringo, Michael Z. Williamson, Sara Hoyt, Tom Kratman and Larry Correia you will probably like this book or find something to like about this book. If you are a reader of IMAO (the author's blog site) you will definitely like or find something to like in this book. If you are a fan of recent Hugo winners and think the past several years worth of winners are the cream of the crop in the genre, you will probably not like this book. Put even more plainly, if you are a peace loving, tree hugging, leftist, progressive, you will not like this book and will probably come back with comments to the effect that it is nothing but gratuitous violence.

That being said, this book does, between the lines, ask some serious questions when it comes to cultural or societal practices. Why are we nice to each other? How should we react in given social situations? Is it right to laugh at another's misfortune? Is it right to drive by an accident with blood in the streets and point and laugh? Yes, all these questions are there and more in this book.

Seriously, this book will probably get some of you to think about social interactions a bit. Those times when you ask "how is it going?" and then you have to actually listen to someone as they tell you about every seemingly inane detail of their lives? Yeah, that subject is tackled here as well. We have all been in situations where we are having an inner dialogue with some acquaintance and talked ourselves out of doing something completely inappropriate to end a conversation. In this book the primary character has no problem doing something inappropriate.

The lead character is an assassin who has had moral reactions genetically engineered out of him. He is not to be seen as socially redeemable, he is not to be seen as sociable. He does the socially acceptable only long enough to perform his function which is to kill the target(s). What is he to do then when he actually finds someone he likes? This is where the story gets some socially redeeming qualities. Our completely amoral assassin falls in love and goes out of his way to save this love interest.

The book as a whole is well written, has a lot of situational humor and is a roller-coaster ride of action. I think every other chapter had something involving a bodycount. It is, if you are of the right inclination, a book that will have you wanting more (it is left wide open for a sequel at the end which it deserves) and probably laughing throughout.

This is one of the better books in military/crime related science fiction to come out this year and I look forward to more work by Mr. Fleming.

I think this was a solid opening novel from Mr. Fleming, The world building is very good and the main character Rico is interesting, though the author's opinions on social viewpoints are rather obviously telegraphed (the aliens/humans analogy for the different races in America, the pro-Christian subtext despite Rico's semi-nihlistic viewpoint) The action sequences are well done and the story wraps up rather well, particularly in the last section when the plans laid in fact do not go as planned...

However the ending itself has a strange cliffhanger, I don't know if this was done by Mr. Fleming as a way to 'leave the door open' for a sequel, I find that point rather disappointing since he does not commit to the character fully and goes for a will he/won't he ending, as such, I can recommend it on a Kindle edition, but I would not recommend it for full price.

This was a really good book. Well written and with a lot of good humor. At least if you have a dark sense of humor, which I do.
I enjoyed the authors commentary on society and the unique character of Rico. Ive read books with 'antiheros' before, however, most were pretty boring and followed the same over all archetype. This character was definitely not typical and I truly loved that. I also enjoyed the way the characters point of view changed throughout the story and how it was incorporated into the events of the storyline.
As a side note, I really like that the author came up with a reasonable explanation for his main characters abiliity to do the action star two gun mojo. Being ex military with more than a passing familiarity with firearms and their use. I freaking hate that crap! But this offered a reasonable reason that hung together. In a Scify book with genetically engineered people anyway. Same with the main characters behavior for just walking in the front door blasting away and killing everything and everyone. It made this book as exciting as a 90s action movie but with enough explanation that it actually made sense. Unlike a 90s action movie.
    Ok im done gushing.
Good book. I highly recommend reading it.

First thing you need to know is that the author is funny, and his protagonist is funny too - not something you would expect from a psychopath. The other thing is that the book is both highly entertaining and thought provoking. Rico questions human behavior from the point of view of a psychopath with no conscience, yet his questions often cause the reader to question these same behaviors - why they came to be, are they even helpful, are they even "good." This is the unexpected gift of the book whose story pulls you along with its action, humor, father-son entanglements, and yes, even love.

Some good ideas but characters not terribly well developed and ultimately the story line quite simple but nonetheless an easy read
