Building that looks like couple having sex is slammed as 'architecture porn'

Online commenters have reacted with hilarity to the Domestikator building in Bochum, Germany, which is used as a hotel capsule for VIPs

A building which appears to look like a couple having sex has stunned onlookers with its architecture.

The temporary installation is intended to show the power of humanity over the natural world, and our disrupted relationship with nature.

But the building, which doubles as a hotel capsule for VIPs at the annual Ruhrtriennale Festival in Bochum, Germany, has been the butt of jokes.

Named the 'Domestikator' by Atelier Van Lieshout, the creative firm responsible, the installation is part of a bigger series at the festival, The Good, The Bad And The Ugly, on display until September 26.

Many visitors have witnessed the structure, which the company claim has received positive responses.

But online commenters have labelled the building pornographic, with Reddit user Bardaf calling it: "Architecture porn at its finest."

Their artistic team began working on the project in 2014, looking for what they describe as "deeper layers beneath the provocative design of the artwork".

The installation will also be on display at the festival - which features theatre, music and arts - in 2016 and 2017.

Rookje Meijerink, of Atelier Van Lieshout, said the people of Bochum have warmed to the design, finding it provocative and slightly humorous.

She said: "The artwork pays tribute to the ingenuity, the sophistication and the capacities of humankind, to the power of organisation, and to the use of this power to dominate, domesticate the natural environment.

"The response by both professionals, press and the general public has been very positive, the installation has featured in a large number of renowned Dutch and German newspapers, magazines and television stations, and has gathered a lot of attention online."
